Boxer turned politician...#TwinLightsPeople W. Warren Barbour • 1888–1943Barbour, a Republican Senator during the FDR administration, was an early proponent of turning Sandy Hook into a state park. He championed a bill co-written by Democratic Congressman William Sutphin proposing that Fort Hancock open its beaches to the public. It was ultimately unsuccessful, but started the ball rolling. Barbour grew up in Monmouth Beach and contracted tuberculosis as a teenager. He cured himself through vigorous exercise, including boxing. In 1910, he became the amateur heavyweight champion of the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt urged Barbour to fight professional champion Jack Johnson, but his mother forbade it. Warren Barbour got into politics in the 1920s and served as Mayor of Rumson before heading to Washington. In the early 1940s, he advocated to allow victims of the Holocaust to enter the US, but died before he could get the bill passed.
