Glenn Carbonara was born September 17, 1966 in Vineland, NJ. A swift and powerful all-around athlete, Glenn began making headlines as a soccer star at Vineland High—a school better known for its football rivalry with Millville Senior High. As a senior in 1983, Glenn scored a state-record 67 goals for the Fighting Clan and received Parade All-America recognition. That was good enough to earn a scholarship to Rutgers.
Glenn was part of Bob Reasso’s star-studded program in the mid-1980s that included Dave Masur, Peter Vermes and Steve Rammel. Rutgers made it to the NCAA Tournament in 1987. After college, Glenn set his sights on a pro career. Unfortunately, the NASL had folded in 1984, so he joined the Major Indoor Soccer League. Glenn played for the Baltimore Blast and San Diego Sockers. He played mostly as a defender in the MISL, though on the smaller playing field he functioned more like a traditional halfback. In 1991, the Sockers won the league title and Glenn got the Unsung Hero Award in the finals.
During the 1990s, Glenn starred in the National Professional Soccer League, another indoor circuit. He was a member of six championship teams and was named NPSL Defender of the Year with the Milwaukee Wave in 2001. He also played for the US National Futsal team during the 1990s with former Cosmos star Chico Borja.
Glenn retired after playing the 2002-03 season with the Philadelphia Kixx. He left pro soccer as a six-time All-Star. He kept his hand in the game as a coach and ran a soccer camp over the next 20 years and signed on as an assistant to Vineland High teammate John Pascarella’s staff at Cumberland County College in Vineland. Glenn is also involved in medical sales.
