Jane Moffet was born July 2, 1930 in Pitman, NJ. She was tall and athletic as a girl, and excelled in a number of sports, including softball. In 1948, she enrolled at East Stroudsberg State Teachers College. A friend dragged her as a travel companion to a mass tryout in Allentown, PA for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which had started during World War II and was entering its final years of operation.
Since she was there anyway, Jane decided to be helpful and help the scout run the tryout. Watching her fine glovework, he asked her to swing the bat. She left that day with a contract. Jane agreed to suit up for the AAGPBL in the summers after her college classes ended, playing sparingly in 1949 for the Springfield Sallies and in 1950 for the Chicago Colleens.
In 1951, Jane became a full-time player, appearing in 94 games for the Kalamazoo Lassies and playing all three outfield positions. She split the 1952 season between the Lassies and Battle Creek Belles. During her four seasons in the league, Jane played catcher, first base and the outfield.
Jane did not return to the field in 1953. Her mother was ill and she had decided to go for her masters at Rutgers. From there, she became a teacher and principal, serving as the head of Saddle Brook High until 1994. Jane retired to Toms River and later to Rio Grande near Cape May.
In 2002, Jane and Teeny Petras were honored by Governor McGreevey prior to a Trenton Thunder game. Jane threw out the first pitch. She passed away in 2018.
