The Babe belts a pair on the Jersey Shore!#TwinLightsPeople Babe Ruth • 1895–1948So who ranks as the most famous person with a connection to our area? In the fall of 1926, following the Yankees’ loss to the Cardinals in the World Series, "The Bambino" played an exhibition game on the ball field in Atlantic Highlands. Ruth came at the invitation of Herb Hunter, a local player and baseball promoter, along with a rag-tag contingent of teammates (including future Hall of Famers Herb Pennock and Waite Hoyt) and miscellaneous baseball acquaintances. Ruth pitched a few innings and belted a pair of homers. The game between Ruth’s All-Stars and the local semipro Highlanders was tied 7–7 when it was called on account of darkness.
